If you are applying in the United States — or to a company that follows US standards — the resume format changes. Career offices at top universities like Harvard or MIT have long published very precise conventions for what is called a resume. Here is the essence.
What an American resume is
It is a short, factual, results-oriented document. Not to be confused with the academic "CV" (long, exhaustive, reserved for research). For a job or internship, the one-page resume is what is expected.
The commonly taught norms
1. One page, no photo or personal information
No photo, no date of birth, no marital status, no nationality. These items, sometimes standard elsewhere, are deliberately absent: US law strictly regulates discrimination, and recruiters expect to see only what relates to the role.
2. The expected structure
- Contact details (name, email, phone, city, LinkedIn) at the top, inside the body.
- Education, often placed first for students and recent graduates.
- Experience, in result-oriented bullet points.
- Skills, projects, and optionally Honors.
3. Bullets that start with an action verb
Each bullet opens with a strong past-tense verb ("Led", "Built", "Analyzed") and states a result, ideally quantified. The taught formula is often: action + method + result. "Built a dashboard automating weekly reporting, cutting prep time by 40%."
Golden rule of the American resume: one page, action verbs, measurable results, and zero irrelevant personal information.
Differences from other formats
- Length: a single page for a junior profile, where other formats tolerate two pages or more.
- Photo and personal data: removed, while still present on some European CVs.
- Tone: heavily results- and impact-oriented, less descriptive of tasks.
- Dates: month/year format, strict reverse-chronological order.
The American resume does not tell everything you did. In one page, it proves what you can accomplish.
GPA, honors and activities
For a student, the GPA is listed if strong, along with honors and leadership in extracurriculars. Everything stays factual: no invented mention, no affiliation you could not back up.
